This site had established trees, many of which were removed to accommodate the establishment of a building that pretty much fills the entire 5 allotments. Three natives were left but this plan seems to seek to remove them all and plant tiny potted specimens in their place. The neighbourhood was given the impression that these three trees would be preserved and it would be the responsibility of the owner and landscaper to make sure this happened and the trees were cyclone-safe.
These established mature trees weathered Cyclone Alfred with no discernible damage. Presumably that is because their root systems had developed properly over time so they were strong enough to support the tree. Is the GCCC now going to give permission for these trees to be removed instead of requiring they be properly managed so they remain on this property and are cyclone-safe ?
We have noticed that a couple of small landscaping street trees a door or so away, also in Meron St, were uprooted by the cyclone and fell over because their root ball was just that - a small ball of roots that hadn't developed beyond the planting hole - obviously straight from the nursery pot, and therefore far too small for the size of the tree as it grew. If the landscaper is using similar trees, will he ensure that sufficient attention is taken to providing enough room for the tree roots to spread out in all directions so the specimens he plants do not get bowled over by wind tunnels created around high rise buildings?
