These trees have already been removed well before the notification of the application. What is the purpose of this? To rubber-stamp a decision? Better to seek forgiveness than ask permission? Recent data has shown a 10% loss in tree cover over suburban Adelaide. Marion council is one of the worst. What's being done to mitigate this?

Why would the described alterations to the house require the killing of the trees I wonder?

YiZhong Zhuang, there was full approval to remove the tree. It was a two stage application. Stage one - approval to remove tree. Stage two - development approval for the renovation. Under no circumstances was the tree removed prior to proper consent. These trees have invasive root systems and damage pipes and building structure. There is intent to plant 10 trees to replace the one removed.
